Captain Company and the Lost Era of Magazine Marketing
When we look at the modern world of marketing we sometimes lose a little bit of our history of marketing. That is probably because most people who love learning about marketing want to learn new techniques of marketing so as to properly promote a business for the purpose of profit. Hey, there is nothing wrong with this but sometimes it is also fun to look back at long lost champions of marketing who are no longer well remembered these days??¦if they are even remembered at all. One such classic marketing campaign was the one promoted by the Captain Company in the 1960’s and 1970’s when it capitalized on the “monster boom” of the era(s).

In the late 1950’s and early 1960’s, the old Universal horror films were released to syndication and UHF stations aired these classic films to enthusiastic audiences on weekend afternoons and evenings. This popularity led to the launching of a wonderful movie magazine called FAMOUS MONSTERS OF FILMLAND. FM kept the love of these horror films alive and helped make horror films a weekend staple well into the late 1970’s until, well, people began getting bored of seeing these same films and new generation of kids weren’t being grabbed by horror films. But, during the heyday of these films there was rabid enthusiasm for horror films and horror related items. This is where the Captain Company filled a huge marketing void through the advertising pages of FAMOUS MONSTERS.
? Basically, the Captain Company sold via mail order a ton of horror movie related products to a massively loyal audience that couldn’t get enough of these tie in products. These products included books, Super 8mm films, model kits, posters, Halloween masks, novelty albums and a ton of other items. Basically, if you were a kid who dug classic horror movie memorabilia the Captain Company was the number one provider and its longevity was nothing short of amazing.
? What is most unique about the success of the Captain Company was the fact that it survived for so long. While it is understandable how reruns of the films would remain popular it is nothing sort of shocking how such massive volumes of tie in merchandise were still selling well into the late 1970’s. Much of the reason for this was the Captain Company’s unique ads that promoted monster “stuff” as the coolest thing in the world and this kept kids sending off their money orders for these great items. Unfortunately, nothing lasts forever and the horror fad faded and interest in tie in merchandise waned to nothingness. But, for a time it was incredibly popular and even more incredibly cool!
Monetizing Your Blog With Adsense, Should You or Shouldn’t You?
Most recently I have seen a lot of debate going on in various internet marketing forums on the subject of “Ad Sense”.
Some believe its OK to run ads and banners on a blog, while others believe its Ok to do so on niche blogs whereas Authority blogs should remain clean with content and messages.
Here is a small video that I recorded to answer this question. My strong feel is if you are running adsense on your blog do so with a big heart. Show the ad where people can see and click, do not hide them. Also do not ruin the content by placing them in the middle of the post.

This is Srini Saripalli and I welcome you to SuccessEngineer.com and on this video recording today I want to share with you one question and I want to answer that one question that I had been repeatedly getting using Adsense on blogs. Well I personally don??™t use Adsense on my authority blog. And the reason behind that is there is nothing wrong in using Adsense. But I want to give a good clear reading experience for all my visitors, all my subscribers when they come to my blog. My content is very important and I want to project my content.
Now do I see other people using Adsense ? Other experts, other Gurus in the market? In the internet business who are running Adsense on their sites ? The answer is Yes. They do. And they do it in a way it goes and blends very well with the website. So if you plan to use your Adsense on your authority blog, authority website, then you blend it in such a way that it looks very natural with the site.
And #2. I see a lot of people who run Adsense but they put it in the footer of the post or very low below on the website. Well it is counter productive. If you have an ad, you want to put the ad in a place where the people can see and click through so that you can make money. But if you show it some where below, some where down, you will get page impressions but you don??™t get any conversions. So I highly recommend that you put it some where, where people can see and click. You don??™t need to be ashamed about it. So what I do personally? I have blogs and websites where I do run Adsense but those are not representing who I am. On my authority site I don??™t run any Adsense.
I do have some ads here and there in bits and pieces but that is primarily testing but not to make any money out of it. Well if I make a lot of money out of it that is well and good but the purpose is not to make money through ads. The purpose of my authority site is to project yourself and to tell people who you are what you do so people can gravitate around you, people can come to you and you provide value and in the process money happens in the back end not in the front end. So that being said I wish you all the best. Do check out Adsense see other programs similar to Adsense that exist in the market and try and play with them, do your testing and see which one converts, which pays out well. There are some programs which pay better than Google Adsense.
So try them out. Do lot of testing and stick to the program that pays you well and converts well. Best of luck. Thank you.
How to Succeed at Being a Failure?
Tired of all those How-To Guides to Get Rich Quick and Be a Success in Life- here are a few steps for those who rather not??¦
1. Don??™t let your boss or families dictate your schedule. Let them rearrange their needs around your time. Allow yourself the luxury of staying awake as long as you please. Sleep in until at least the afternoon to insure you are well rested.
2. Never finish anything you have started. If winners never quit, then losers never complete. Everyone expects you will fail anyway. Prove them right-so you can be in the wrong- where you belong. Put off until ???whenever you feel like it??™ what needed to be done yesterday.
3. Better yet- why even start? Tell your boss and family you plan to, but then just give up. That??™s why you should never make plans. No sense in putting yourself to all that trouble. Leave your work unfinished for the over achievers. Let them come in and clean up behind you.
4. Assume everyone is out to get you. All your problems stem from others trying to sabotage you. Always arrive late to work and for any appointment. Leave your job early and do not volunteer to stay after hours with the suckers.
5. Make promises you never intend to keep. Alienate all your friends and family from ever asking you a favor. They think you are never going to amount to anything, so why bother?
6. Forget about saving for a rainy day. Spend as much money as you want. Why strive to get ahead when someone will only knock you back down? Accepting a chance for advancement is only an invitation to fail. Let the bozos climb up the ladder.
7. Get married with the belief that you will end up divorced.? Marry badly by choosing the worst possible partner. Let your children talk back to you and do whatever they wish.
8. Waste as much time as humanly possible. Higher education won??™t get you anywhere. While in school- do the bare minimum. Drop out of school as soon as you can. Any attempt on your part to better yourself will lead to future expectations- so stay the way you are.
9. Blame all the bad luck that follows you on your childhood, parents, spouse, children- not yourself. Keep that chip on your shoulder- shiny and polished. Stick with the knowledge that everyone else is wrong and you are right.
10. Borrow money with no intention to pay it back.
When anyone lends you anything- keep it- that??™s what the fools get for trusting you. Pay your bills only when you are being threatened with foreclosure or disconnect. Rules are meant to be broken- do not worry with silly rules.
Now, get out there and show your Mother proof she was right. Be the best failure you can be! Wait a minute- that would make you good at something. Oh well, you probably failed to read all the rules.
