No Procrastination Please

Procrastination is something that many people, if not all people, constantly deal with. You should not believe that this is something that only you go through. Yet, it is something that you need to take care of as quickly as you can so that you can claim back the time you are losing.

Procrastination is defined as putting off doing something that you should be putting your attention onto right now. Usually, people do this when they want to do something else that is favorable, a bit more fun or even just easier. Is this you? Do you spend long days working hard at what you are trying to accomplish but you are investing your time in accomplishing the easy tasks instead of taking on the larger, more important tasks? A common problem here is that many people can not see the difference between priorities in tasks.

Differentating Between a Priortity? and an Urgency

You have an important task to complete. You also have an urgent task to complete. Which do you go to first? You should accomplish the important task because it is just that, important! Far too many people look towards accomplishing the things that they think are necessary to complete right now, forgo the important task and then need to find a way or a time to balance the ball in their favor.

The task here that you should be completing is that which is important, the one that needs your full attention and that will get you the most bang for the buck.

Is There A Formula For Success After All?

“I can’t give you a sure-fire formula for success, but I can give you a formula for failure: try to please everybody all the time.”

That was Herbert Bayard Swope, (January 5, 1882 – June 20, 1958) American Editor and Jounalist; first receipent of the Pultizer Prize.

While I have read the great work of Herbert, I am quoting him here, because most recently I had an opportunity of reading Tim Ferriss’s book ” The 4-Hour Work Week” in which Tim highlights this quote and makes his point in a big way.

Lets move on...

Most people want to be successful in life. They set goals and commence the hard work to achieve them. The question is what is success after all? Actually, success can mean different things to different people.

For example, a person that owns their real estate investing business might set their level of success at buying and selling 20 properties a year while someone who loves music might consider success as cutting their own CD. In addition, success does not always have to involve money. Success could be getting a good grade in a difficult class or learning how to bake the perfect chocolate cake.

Success comes in all different shapes and sizes with one common denominator. Success is important and it takes work to reach.

The first and the foremost thing one has to do it to realize his or her potential. In order to succede at anything, you need to assert that you have the potential to reach your goals. For example, if you want to be a recording artist but have no singing ability, having success in this field is not likely. However, if you love working on houses and have a real talent for fixing them up and flipping them, and to you, success would mean buying cash generating commerical properties, you have potential to learn and achieve that success.

Regardless of what your specific success is, there are ways to achieve and surpass your goal. There are plenty of aids that are available to you in your quest. All you have to do is look for them. In fact over the next few days I will be sharing a few of them here on this blog.

Your Can Create Your Own Success

Call it inspiration or determination, the fact remains that when you concentrate on doing your best, you constantly improve yourself, your performance, and over-all effectiveness.

You need to know yourself, to be your constantly-improving best. And you also need to decide if you want to be your “best,” or if you want to improve only your “average performance.” There’s a lot of difference between the two. If you want to improve “average performance,” all you need do is cut down on mistakes-the safe and traditional way; but it must be obvious that the reduction of mistakes has nothing to do with the improvement of your best work. The reduction-of-mistakes approach merely raises slightly the level of mediocrity. Besides, if all you want to be is upper-crust mediocre.

You need to understand what your “best” is; so you need to explore and appreciate those experiences which applied your “best” capabilities. You need to appreciate them. My understanding of what I think is your “best,” will surely be different from how you feel about your own experiences. Only you know how you feel about your experiences. You may have done something that brought you praise and an increase in salary, but if in your own considered opinion it was a stroke of luck, that’s all it was. Or maybe you worked to all hours completing a project that was greeted with apathy or even antipathy; it still is a big achievement if that is the way you feel about it.

Once I was invited to speak to class of engineering students on the subject of self improvement. I was getting ready to start, right then there was a small power failure in the building, while some electricians worked on restoring the power, I asked the professor of the class if he ever conducts any one-on-one’s with his students on the subject of achievements, He sarcastically mentioned: I am yet to have a few of my own, what do I share with thim? When I insisted he completed his PHD’s from IIT( a premier institute in India) and that is a marvelous achievement in itself??¦

“No” replied the professor, that was just a fluke. I just so happened that??¦but quick to say “look at what have you done for yourself even though you do not have a PHD you are successful and renowned”

Obviously the professor considered as achievements only the successes that contained public recognition as an important factor. Another man with the same kind of degrees might regard it as an act perseverance and superior form of achievement

This is an important thing. To create your own success, consider only those achievements of yours that are important to you, regardless of what tradition, or your boss, or your friends might have to say about them.
