Is Self Improvement an Abstract Concept?

Sometimes people are just not satisfied with their life and this is a commonplace feeling. This is, honestly, not a bad thing. In life there is always room for improvement and often improvement is good. After all, what is better…improvement or status quo? Or, would you prefer to go into decline? Needless to say self improvement triumphs all of these situations.

Unfortunately, while virtually everyone will agree that it is best to improve, many are simply unaware of how to go about improving themselves. Often, people will look for magic bullets or a solution in the form of a finished product that promises to unlock all the secrets of the self improvement maze. Some of these pop psychology solutions, however, can involve overcomplicating the whole self improvement process. In fact, sometimes all that is required is to make clear demonstrative changes would be to actually define self- improvement.

When it comes to the subject of self improvement, many people have a far more abstract definition on what this is as opposed to an accurate one. That is to say, they perceive a lot of it in life in the form of a multitude of ancillary gains. In other words, they believe that if they acquire more money or more prestige of more items they will automatically manifest self improvement within themselves. This is, however, a thoroughly pseudo-logical explanation. After all, there are a great many celebrities who have all the money in the world and can essentially surround themselves with all the toys money can buy. They can even surround themselves with people who only say ???yes??? to them. Yet, there is little self improvement found within any of these people. In fact, many of them simply follow a forgone path to further misery and self destruction. The reason for this is that they discover that external stimuli are not a true means of self improvement and this leads to despair.

Hence, there exists the impetus for destructive behavior. Probably the main problem in the above mentioned scenario is the fact that individuals are not looking for self improvement within. Instead, they are looking for improvements in their external scenarios and this is an abstraction and not actual self improvement. Now, this may make for a fine distraction, but it does not even remotely begin to touch their own personal self improvement in any way. Remember, self improvement begins with the self and does not exist in the external nor in the abstract.
