Goals, Planning & Self-Improvement!

Personal Development can run the gamut of a number things but one thing it most definitely is not is haphazard. That is to say, the ability to improve through a random series of events is quit rare. Instead, it would be a much better idea to take specific steps in order to achieve a modicum of self improvement. One such way would be to utilize the methodology of Personal Development Plans (PDP). Now, some may look at those words and assume that they infer an overly academic or complicated process. They do not and, in fact, actually refer to a simplified process of steps.

Step Number One – Develop a Goal: In order to visible improve in an area, one needs to define what specific area one wishes to improve. For example, if one feels lonely or isolated the goal would be to become a more social person. Of course, defining a clear goal does not automatically mean that goal will be met and this leads us to out next point.

Step Number Two – Plan a Course of Action: If you have a goal in mind and you wish to achieve this goal you must chart out the steps that will be necessary for making the goals come true. For example, if one has developed a goal of being more sociable the steps required to achieving this goal could involve simply dedicating more time to going out of the house and taking part in more hobbies and activities.

Step Number Three – Follow Through and Pay Close Attention to Feedback: Simply put, defining a particular goal and drawing up a plan of action are not enough to be successful. That is, the person must actually take the necessary steps to put those goals into action and then gauging the success of the steps.

If the steps you are taking are not delivering the desired results, then it may be necessary to make modifications to the process so as to achieve the goal. Remember, it is the result that is important and not the method that one takes to achieve it. So, do not get too hung up on pre-planned steps as this could lead to inhibiting improvement as opposed to facilitating it.

Again, the key to successful self-improvement is defining a goal, drawing up the plans to achieve that goal and then following through. It is as simple (and effective) as that.

Successful Planning!
